KILNSEY CRAG, UPPER WHARFEDALE, YORKSHIRE DALES - K00187Here we will be showing details of some of the images we have sold.

This is a view well known to visitors to Upper Wharfedale in Yorkshire.

This overhanging limestone crag was carved out by the retreating ice at the end of the last age, probably some 10,000 years ago.

It is well used by intrepid rock climbers and overlooks the annual Kilnsey show held on the first Tuesday after the last Monday in August.  A stream runs along its foot which in the seasons is home to a plethora of wild flowers.  Mimulas particularly grow in great profusion, providing a great swathe of yellow to catch the eye of the passing traveller.

It also overlooks the Kilnsey Trout Farm whose clear spring waters tumble down the adjacent hillside. This area of land was once owned by Fountains Abbey and controlled from Kilnsey Grange, a lovely medieval building now converted to a private dwelling. The monastic authorities had a major business in wool from their vast estates which was traded far and wide across Europe.  Nowadays sheep and farming continue to play a major part in the economy of the area together with tourism.
